US ‘pressing everyone’ including Israel to de-escalate – Blinken — RT World News

Washington is preparing to help its key ally fend off an imminent retaliatory strike by Iran, the secretary of state says

All parties in the Middle East, including Israel, should refrain from escalatory actions, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday.

The region is bracing for an Iranian retaliation for the assassination of a senior Hamas official, which Tehran has blamed on Israel.

Ismail Haniyeh, who was the political leader of the Palestinian militant movement, was killed last week in a bombing, after he travelled to Iran from his usual place of residence in Qatar. Tehran has vowed revenge against Israel, accusing it of violating Iranian sovereignty.

“Over the past few days, we’ve been in constant contact with partners in the region and well beyond,” Blinken told journalists. “In those conversations, we’ve heard a clear consensus: no one should escalate this conflict.”

The top US diplomat reiterated Washington’s commitment to defending Israel, but stressed that the Jewish state should moderate its actions.

“Further attacks only raise the risk of dangerous outcomes that no one can predict and no one can fully control,” he warned, adding that the US will “press everyone involved, including Israel, to avoid anything that could actually escalate the conflict.”

Blinken stressed that defusing tensions is vital not only to prevent a major conflict in the region, but also to enable a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. He declined to answer directly, when asked why Washington expected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to heed the calls of US President Joe Biden, after “ignoring” them so far.

The diplomat was speaking to the press after he and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke with their Australian counterparts at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz claimed last Sunday that during a recent conversation, Biden told Netanyahu: “Stop bullsh**ing me”, after concluding that the prime minister was trying to deceive him about attempts to return Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.

“Netanyahu is trying to prolong the war instead of focusing on how to get to a hostage deal,” Haaretz quoted a senior official in the Biden administration saying. “It’s making it harder for us to continue supporting Israel over time.”
