Former Calgary Police Officer Wanted on Canada-Wide Warrant for Breach of Trust

A former Calgary police officer is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for allegedly engaging in personal relationships with women he met through police-related matters, and for misusing police databases to contact and further interact with them.

Constable Brett Singer, 51, is accused of pursuing personal relationships with “numerous women” he met during calls for service between 2008 and 2023, said the Calgary Police Service (CPS) in a Dec. 4 media release. Singer would use police database records to “facilitate subsequent conversations” with the women and make “inappropriate advances” toward them, said officials.

“To the women who were impacted by this individual and to Calgarians generally, I want you to know this is a serious situation that we will never take lightly,” said Chief Constable Mark Neufeld in the release.

“We have zero tolerance for these behaviours by police officers and will take every measure to protect the public and to hold those who engage in these activities to full account,” he added. “This behaviour is not reflective of the values of our service, nor the good work done by the majority of our members every day.”

Singer has been charged with one count of breach of trust and one count of misuse of a computer system, following a 16-month investigation by the CPS professional standards section.

The initial complaint against Singer was filed by a citizen in July 2023, said Neufeld at a Dec. 4 press conference.

The complainant reported meeting the officer during a call for service and later being contacted by him “extensively,” which led to a romantic relationship, according to Neufeld. She later discovered “several other women” who allegedly had similar experiences with the officer. Their names and related information were provided to professional standards investigators.

As evidence supporting the allegations came to light, Singer was suspended with pay in January, followed by suspension without pay in September. He resigned shortly thereafter, according to officials.

Singer is believed to be currently outside of Canada, said officials. At the time of his departure, no criminal charges had yet been laid against him.

He had been a member of the Calgary Police Service for 16 years.

Neufeld described the case as “embarrassing.”

“This is extraordinary, and to my knowledge the first time we have issued an arrest warrant for a current or former police officer for offences that are alleged to have occurred while that police officer was on duty,” he said.
